The International Semiconductor Industry Association (SEMI) has announced the formation of the Global Semiconductor Climate Alliance (SCC), with more than 60 founding members across the semiconductor value chain responding to the alliance's mission to accelerate progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the industry ecosystem. SEMI is a trade association serving the global electronics manufacturing and design supply chain. It was founded by more than 60 founding member semiconductor companies. James Amano, senior director of SEMI's international Standards department, told EE Times, a sister platform to EBusiness International, that sustainability has become a focus for the industry and SEMI's 2,500 members in recent years. Although many members have their own sustainability initiatives, the SCC focuses on the voices of all members, not just individuals. Launched jointly by SEMI member companies in 2021, the SCC focuses on non-climate-related environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues, Amano said. Specifically, SCCS contain three key points: collaboration, transparency, and goals. The SCC will help member companies collaborate on common approaches, technological innovations and communication channels to sustainably reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The transparency of the SCC comes in the form of annual public reporting of progress, including disclosure of emissions reporting data for enterprise Scope 1(Scope 1), Scope 2(Scope 2) and Scope 3(Scope 3). Amano noted that the goal is to set short - and long-term decarbonization goals to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. All of the founding members of the SCC support the Paris Agreement and the related agreements to achieve a 1.5℃ goal-led transition path. "Our fundamental purpose is to improve and reduce CO2 emissions from the semiconductor industry." "He added.
